On The Trail // Caprock Nature Trail

Yesterday was perfect.  I couldn't have asked for better weather for spending a couple of hours at the Fort Worth Nature Center.  Temps in the high 60's, overcast skies, and the most amazing breeze ever haha!

We headed to the Hardwicke Interpretive Center first, to check out the exhibits and artifacts.  This Owl had been hit by a vehicle and has since been rehabilitated, but unable to survive in the wild.

We also checked out a really great display table full of tons of neat nature finds.  I would LOVE to decorate our reptile room to look like a natural history library/museum.  I love this stuff!

We also got to see a pair of Box Turtles mating!   I didn't mention it in my most recent "At The Zoo" post, but we also saw a pair of Sulcata Tortoises mating while we were there!  Signs of Spring!  Yay!

After leaving the exhibit area, we decided to take the Caprock Nature Trail, which is full of Limestone rock.  I pinky promise that I'll get photos of that next time around.  We saw lots of tracks in the mud near the river, and Matthew snagged a bit of litter to throw away on our way out :)

More signs of Spring!!!  Insects are starting to make their way out and fresh things are growing!

I was so tired by the time we were leaving that I wasn't even paying attention to the fact that this Turkey Vulture was perched on a tree just a few feet away.  I nearly jumped out of my shoes when it decided we were too close.  We stayed and waited for it to come back around and land on another tree nearby.  I trekked through a patch of cacti and ventured to the edge of a Limestone rock to get this shot.  It's certainly not an in-focus photo, but I absolutely LOVE Vultures, so I couldn't leave this photo out.

I was pooped by the time we got home and treated myself to a Twilight Bath Bomb by LUSH that was part of my Valentine's Day goodies.  Those things are seriously the perfect way to end a day :)

Happy Monday and I hope you have a great week!

  1. I love these photos! I can't wait until it's a bit warmer out so I can go to some of the nature reserves near me.

  2. These are gorgeous pictures! Especially your capture of box turtle love. :)
Your display table reminds me of going to the Orlando Science Center when I was a kid. They had a nature trading post, where you could bring in anything you find and trade it with other kids who found stuff, or turn it in to the Science Center for points you could accumulate and eventually buy something of theirs with. It was pretty much my childhood dream to save up the million points required to go home with a taxidermy otter.

    1. Haha thank you Kelly! That's so neat that they had/have a program like that! A taxidermy otter would be so cool and definitely worth it!
