10 Things/ April 2015

Not only have we gotten plenty of April showers...but we've had LOADS of my favorite weather:

I had most of my hair chopped off!  I went from this length:
 To this length:
Oh, and I bought a pair of overalls!  P.S.  They didn't come with the snake ;)
Things turned green again and started growing!
Some of my favorite creatures are coming out of their winter hiding places:

I made some deliciously cute (maybe creepy to some) sugar cookies!
I started a new feature involving my sweet reptilian pets: Fun Shoot Friday!
I relived a childhood memory, and caught a cute little crawdad:
I shared a post introducing our kitties and dog!  Here's an extra photo of Wesley that i didn't include before, because I thought his drooling mouth was a bit much (he was watching the birds outside):
I changed the name of my blog and started the process of re-branding for a blog makeover!

Even more stuff I loved about April:

  • Matthew and I went to see Ex Machina and I fell in LOVE with it.  It's seriously a must see.  As a side note...Oscar Isaac rocks a super hot beard in it.  I've been secretly obsessing over him since seeing the film haha!
  • I managed to save up quite a bit of money this month and am getting closer to my savings goal for a new camera body!  I'm terrible at saving, so this is kind of a big deal :)
  • Our dryer broke this month, and so we've started line drying our clothes.  I love it.  I never want to own a dryer again.  It's so relaxing!

Before & After // A Much Needed Haircut

This past Saturday, I did something I haven't done in about 3 years.  I got a haircut!  I've neglected going to a salon for a number of silly reasons...but mostly because I'm always nervous going to salons.  I've never really found a place that I love, and I've been known to go for long periods of time between cuts, but never this long.  I can be stupid shy at times, but I think this takes the cake for sure.  I was so nervous before going in, but everyone was so incredibly sweet and my hairdresser understood exactly what I wanted, and I love my new hair cut so much!

Before, my hair was usually a super tangled mess of voluminous bun on the top of my head.  My routine was to wash it once every 4 to 6 days (more often than that would totally kill it), dry it with the help of my diffuser (thus creating tangles galore), and throw it up in a bun on the top of my head.  I had absolutely no desire or patience to do anything more with it than that.  It was so heavy, I shed like crazy because of the tangles, and it was sooooooo hot.  I can't begin to explain how hot and heavy it felt.  It was miserable.

My hairdresser was amazing.  She suggested thinning out the back a bit to remove some of the bulk and the asymmetrical length is exactly what I wanted.  I love the shaved sides too.  I feel like this haircut is totally ME and I love it so much :)  I can't believe I went so long with hair I didn't feel comfortable in!  I'm excited to go back in for regular appointments now!

What's the longest amount of time you've gone without a haircut?

Fun Shoot Friday // 4

Popcorn is back for her first Fun Shoot Friday!  In case you haven't yet met Popcorn, she's my juvenile Albino Ball Python!  I usually do my photo shoots on the weekends, and I've been feeding her every Wednesday orThursday.  It's recommended that you wait at least 48 hours after a meal before handling your snake, but I like to make it at least 36.  This is why Starbucks has been dominating Fun Shoot Fridays lately!  I changed up her feeding schedule and switched her to Mondays, which gives her plenty of time to digest.

I like the way these photos turned out.  The background kind of reminds me of graffiti, and the dark colors make her pop :)  You have no idea how much love I have for this little snake :)

Happy Friday and have a great weekend!!

Life Lately // 3

I haven't shared our kitties on the blog yet, and they're a major part of my life so I should definitely share them often!  Clockwise from top left: Sprinkles, Brando, Luna, and Wesley!  I feel like these photos are spot on as far as helping to show their personalities.

Sprinkles is always wide eyed and curious...seriously-it's creepy sometimes when you catch her staring at you with these eyes!  She's been known to sit in the shower while the water is going, and she will eat ANYTHING you put in front of her.

Brando is a total ham.  He loves people (but HATES Sprinkles) and will not hesitate to make your lap his new bed.  He loves belly rubs and has one of the loudest purrs ever.  We're like Forrest and Jenny.

Luna is the loner of the bunch.  She doesn't like to be held, always looks serious, and won't hesitate to assert her dominance.  She loves sleeping on the back of the couch-and one of her favorite things to do is sit by the back door and squeak/chirp at the birds while they eat.

Wesley is the handsome mischievous one.  I might even go as far as to compare him to Han Solo.  He gets along with everybody, and loves to have boxing/wrestling matches with Sprinkles.  He is also a giant fan of boxes of any kind.  His two favorite toys are an old plush snake (or worm, I can't tell) and my hair ties.  He also has one of the cutest meows.  It's tiny and soft and sounds like it should be coming from a kitten instead.

I've shared photos of our dog Brandi a couple of times before, but in case you haven't seen her yet, I shot this pretty photo of her too.  Brandi thinks she's smaller than she is and loves trying to sit on the little round foot stools.  She reminds me of those old illustrations of circus bears or seals sitting on a ball.  So cute :)  She gets along with all of the cats, and even gives them kisses sometimes.  She's a big sweetheart.
April showers bring May flowers....and we're definitely getting the showers :)  Something you may not know about me is that I LOVE stormy weather.  If I had it my way-there would be thunderstorms every day.  When I was a kid, I even used to ask my mom regularly to wake me up if there was a storm.  I just wanted to watch and listen and enjoy.  We had a pretty good one on Saturday evening and I got the shot below of this amazing storm cloud just above our house.  Just in case you were interested in seeing a little corner of our neighborhood, I took the next photo from our front yard.  I was trying to get a good shot of the dark sky in the distance, but it just came out way lighter than it was in person.

I'm getting my hair cut this weekend!  It's going to be the first time in like 3 or 4 years!  It's gotten SO incredibly long and I do nothing with it but dry it with the diffuser and throw it into a bun.  It's so heavy and thick and I just don't have the patience to do anything with it.  Sooooo I'm going to chop it.  I thought about going straight to a super short cut, but decided I should take it slow and start with something longer.  I've been pinning like crazy, and I think I've decided to get something like this:
Is she the cutest or what?!  I love the color too, but unfortunately I'm not sure if that shade would get me sent home from work.  What do you think?  Could you wear this color to work?

What have you been up to lately?

At The Park // Frogs and Crawdads

I've been looking forward to sharing these photos since last week!  They're actually a continuation of last Mondays photo trip to the park.  There were so many great finds, that I just decided to split them up between two posts :)  For all of you bloggers out there, is it just me or do you get impatient sometimes and want to just post everything all at once?  The waiting game kills me sometimes hahaha!

This little Cricket Frog was so laid back while I snapped away.  He made a couple of little hops between these photos, and then after I snapped the one below, he decided to call it a day and dove into the creek.

When I was a kid, my dad took my sisters and me to a creek while visiting family in Oklahoma.  The adults were doing their own thing and he showed us how to catch crawdads.  We spent the entire time there just catching them.  It was so much fun!  That was my dads way to keep us preoccupied while the adults did their own thing.  It worked like a charm :)  This is the first little guy I've caught in years, and it was sooo tiny!  I love how alien they look.

Have a great week!

Something Has Changed....

You may remember from my April Goals post, that one of my goals this month is to get an amazing blog makeover.  Part of my makeover plan has been to change my blog name and switch to a .com address.  Although it will still be a bit longer before the re-design takes place, I wanted to go ahead and let you in on at least one aspect of the changes to come.

So why Lady Serpentine?  I loved Hike & Seek, and when I first started this blog my content was 100% Nature Photography.  It made sense.  While doing some content planning exercises, I decided that I wanted to incorporate more lifestyle posts...and that I wanted to start sharing a lot more about my reptile keeping hobby.  Something that you always hear from successful bloggers is that you should blog about what you love.  One of my greatest loves is Herpetology.  I love reptiles.  Whether it's searching for native species outdoors or caring for the ones I call pets, I love them.  The thing that's always held me back about sharing reptiles in any of my posts on any blog I've ever had, is that a lot of people dislike them.  I've been taking the wrong approach and ignoring that successful blogger advice of blogging about what you love.  Now I'm ready to put my big girl pants on and make this blog a place that truly reflects me.  Lady Serpentine popped into my head one day, and I identified with it instantly.  Remember in Avatar when Jake Sully syncs with his Direhorse and later his Mountain Banshee?  Yeah, it was like that :)  It encompasses the part of my life I've always wanted to blog about, but never have because I was afraid it would scare readers away.  I also think it sounds quite pretty :)  So there you have it!

If you currently have one of my Hike & Seek buttons on your blog, and you'd like to have an updated one, just send me an email at ohrockymail@gmail.com and I'll get it to you right away!

I hope you're all having a beautiful weekend and I'll see you tomorrow!

Fun Shoot Friday // 3

So Starbucks recently took a space adventure in his ultra classy UFO spaceship.  I'm not sure where his travels took him because he refuses to spill the beans!  He did bring back these photos though (I'm assuming he used a tripod?), so at least he hasn't left us completely in the dark.  Rainbow skies and purple sands....I wanna go!

Any ideas for an upcoming Fun Shoot Friday?
Have a great weekend!

At The Park // Mushrooms and Millipedes

Sundays walk in the park was so much better than our previous ones have been...thank you Spring!!!  From the time I stepped out of the truck to the moment I got back in...there was something neat for me to photograph.  The Ink Cap mushrooms in the above photo were just a small little cluster sitting next to a giant patch of them.  I've personally never seen Ink Caps before, so this was a pretty awesome start to our visit ;)

I immediately headed down to the creek area which is off the trail and a short walk through the trees.  I came across tons of grasshoppers, spiders, and butterflies, but my favorite finds were these American Giant Millipedes!  Aren't they cute!?  As soon as I found the first one, I rushed off to find Matthew so that I could share the cuteness.  As soon as I spotted him I saw that he was carrying something in his closed fist too.  He was disappointed to find that I had found the same thing he had and that his was about a 10th the size of mine.  Only seconds later though, he spotted one like mine and we enjoyed watching them crawl on my arm before we let them go in the leaf litter.

On our way back to the parking lot we spotted this Hummingbird Moth!  I've only seen them a handful of times, and each time I get really excited.  Moths are neat regardless of what type, but these are so cool!

And because I want to start sharing more photos of myself, here's a shot Matthew took of me as we were leaving!

How was your weekend?

Fun Shoot Friday // 2

Happy Friday!  I've been looking forward to today all week, because I've been so excited to share my second installment of "Fun Shoot Friday" with you guys!  I had a different idea in mind for this weeks theme with Starbucks, but ended up doing this one instead.  It all worked out for the best though, because I personally think these are super cute :)  Gecko smiles seriously melt my heart!

I discovered cute little stickers in the scrapbook section of Joann's and am obsessed with them now.  They're what I used for the trees in the background, and they have sooooo many different themes that I'll never run out of ideas for incorporating them :)

Going through these photos makes me want to do a picnic theme sometime in the future!  Maybe Starbucks will even have a girlfriend by then ;)
Have a great weekend!
